Escape the Cult of Busy

In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to fall into the trap of the cult of busy where being over-scheduled seems like the norm. But constantly being on the go checking off tasks can have detrimental effects on your well-being. So, let's explore the negative impacts of this over-scheduled lifestyle and discover some practical tips to help you slow down and find your balance again.

In a Boston TED Talk, Dorie Clark shares some interesting findings about why we may choose to be so busy. For one, busyness is a status symbol - if you are super busy, you must be super important. Another reason is we don't want to deal with painful thoughts or feelings, like grief or lonliness. Or we aren't ready to answer big, existential questions like what is my purpose in life? Staying busy keeps our brains occupied so we can avoid the hard stuff.

The Dark Side of Busyness

Being caught up in the cult of busy can lead to a myriad of negative consequences, both physically and mentally. Research has shown that chronic stress resulting from being overburdened with tasks can have adverse effects on your health. From increased anxiety and fatigue to a weakened immune system, the toll of relentless busyness is undeniable. Moreover, being constantly on the move leaves little room for self-care, relaxation, and meaningful connections with others, leading to feelings of isolation and burnout.

A 2021 study by the World Health Organization concluded that working 55 or more hours per week is associated with an increase in stroke and heart attack. Jonathan Haidt explored the effects of being overscheduled on kids and teens for his book The Anxious Generation and found that kids lose out on important developmental gains when they are over-scheduled. Sherrie Bourg Carter is the author of High Octane Women: How Superachievers Can Avoid Burnout (Prometheus Books, 2011) and does a nice summary of the negative effects busyness and the resulting stress has on the body.

Here are some practical tips to help you slow down and prioritize your well-being:

  • Set Boundaries : Learn to say no to commitments that don't align with your values and priorities. It's okay to decline additional tasks if it means preserving your sanity.

  • Schedule Downtime : Just like you schedule meetings and appointments, block off time in your calendar for rest and relaxation. Treat this time as non-negotiable. Use it to...

  • Prioritize Self-Care and Engage in activities just for fun : Read the new book from your favorite author, lose yourself in a new TV show, create some art, take a class, go for a walk, indulge in a a night out wirh friends, or jump into a spontaneous dance party!

  • Practice Mindfulness : Take a moment each day to be present and focus on the here and now. Mindfulness can help reduce stress and increase your overall sense of well-being.

  • Unplug Regularly : Disconnect from technology and social media to reduce distractions and allow yourself to unwind without constant notifications. Instead of scrolling, just be and let your mind wander.

  • Delegate Tasks : Don't be afraid to ask for help. Whether it's at work or home, delegating tasks can lighten your load and create space for activities that bring you joy.

Rediscover Balance and Thrive

Breaking away from the cult of busy is a journey towards reclaiming your time, energy, and overall well-being. By slowing down and making intentional choices to prioritize what truly matters to you, you can rediscover balance and lead a more fulfilling life. If that new time opens up painful wounds, find a therapist or support person to be there with you as you tackle the big questions. Remember, it's not about doing the most; it's about doing what matters most to you.
