I Resolve to...NVM.

barbbloom

It's January. Inevitably people are asking, "What are your New Year's resolutions?!" Years ago I resolved not to make resolutions. I tended to reach too high and set myself up for failure. Now I use the new year to reflect on the past one and see what I want to tweak.

For example, I do a pretty good job of moving at least 30 minutes each day. My Apple Watch confirms this. This year I want to add 15 minutes of movement in the morning, after my coffee of course, to help me wake up my aging joints and focus. I'm going to try a few ideas, once or twice a week until I hit on a routine that feels good.

If you choose to use this day on the calendar to tweak your life, (and you could choose any day!) consider asking yourself these questions:

  • What is working in my life that I want to keep? Maybe you totally rock your morning routine. Maybe you get quality sleep. Maybe you've reconnected with an old friend.

  • What do I want more of? Do you want to add one more family meal each week? Do you need to increase your fiber? Do you love cooking and want to expand your repartee?

  • What do I want to cut out of my life? Are you ready to give up on a bad habit? Or maybe you are ready to set up a boundary that limits your workload.

Then allow yourself time to figure it out. Start small. And adjust or quit if it's not working. I also recommend not announcing it on social media! That adds too much pressure to "succeed." And allows you to quit if you want. Be gentle on yourself - change is hard.

And if you aren't ready to make any changes - don't!
